The Glenn Burke Story

The San Francisco Gay Softball League is invited to join Comcast SportsNet Bay Area at their premiere screening of Out. The Glenn Burke Story.   This one-hour documentary tells the dramatic tale of Burke’s legacy as the first openly homosexual Major League Baseball player.   Early in his career, Burke felt he had to hide his true self from his teammates. Later, when he began to reveal glimpses into his sexuality the baseball establishment began to close him out.  Out. The Glenn Burke Story tells the tumultuous story of the wedge that was driven between Burke and the Los Angeles management, the ensuing similar situation in Oakland that led to Burke’s abrupt retirement, and the hero’s welcome that Burke received in San Francisco’s Castro District after he left professional baseball, and joined our own San Francisco Gay Softball League.

The SFGSL teams are invited to partake in a screening and town hall discussion at the Castro Theatre on Wednesday, November 10 at 7:30 pm.

Tickets are $5 and proceeds support Marty’s Place which was created to provide warm shelter and tender loving care for homeless persons with HIV/AIDS, and manages ancillary services for residents at their request and as circumstances warrant. Marty’s Place provided a homeless Glenn Burke shelter and care as he coped with the effects of HIV/AIDS.
